One of the biggest concerns I hear from people who are thinking about moving to Gig Harbor is around paying the bridge tolls. Here’s a useful explainer to help demystify tolls.

What is the toll?

Tolls vary depending on the number of axels of your vehicle and how you pay. But I’m going to assume you have a “normal” 2 axel car and I’m also going to assume that you sign up for a Good2Go pass (as almost everyone who lives in Gig Harbor does). Given those assumption, you would pay $5.00 per trip from Gig Harbor to Tacoma. (But coming back home is free!)

Yikes! Is it just me, or does $5.00 seem like a lot?

Well. It’s not like anyone likes to pay it. But don’t let it scare you off. For most people in Gig Harbor the tolls becomes somewhat invisible. Good2Go deducts the money from your account a couple times a month to cover your tolls, so it’s not like you’ll see a bunch of $5.00 costs. It’s easy and flexible and after a short time, you’ll barely notice.

Really?

Really. The other thing about the tolls that you will find is this: you will pay it less often than you think. Certainly if you commute over the bridge for work, you’ll be tolled once per workdays. But these days, most day-to-day errands can be done in Gig Harbor without needing to cross the bridge.

The main thing you should know about tolls: living in Gig Harbor is worth it!
